School/College/Division Description

The Humanities in the College of Letters and Science are represented by a wide array of academic departments, interdisciplinary certificate programs, units that support student learning, and research and community-engaged Centers. We offer courses in culture, narrative production and criticism, media studies, communication, philosophy, art history, and the languages. All undergraduate students engage with the humanities at some point during their studies at UWM. Faculty and instructional staff in the humanities offer courses that challenge students to improve their abilities to think and communicate more effectively. Studying the humanities is essential for future success and for the success of our community.

Job Summary

The College of Letters and Science is seeking candidates for the position of Associate Dean for the Humanities. This is a Limited Appointment on an annual pay basis at 50% time. The appointment is expected to begin by the end of June 2023. The Associate Dean for the Humanities is a key member of College leadership and works collaboratively with the Dean, the Associate Deans for the Natural Sciences and Social Sciences, the Assistant Deans, and other members of the College administrative staff.

The Associate Dean for the Humanities has direct administrative oversight over:

  • Departments and Department-like Bodies, including Ancient and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; Art History; Communication; English; Global Studies; Philosophy; Spanish and Portuguese; Translation and Interpreting Studies; and Women's and Gender Studies
  • Interdepartmental Majors and Degree Programs, including Film Studies; the Masters in Language, Literature, and Translation (MALLT); Latin American, Caribbean and U.S. Latinx Studies; and Religious Studies
  • Centers and Facilities, including the Emile H. Mathis Art Gallery; the Center for Celtic Studies; the Stahl Center for Jewish Studies; the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies; the Center for 21st Century Studies; the Language Resource Center; the Writing Center; and UWM's NPR affiliate WUWM
  • An array of Certificate and Other Programs
  • The Associate Dean hears student grievances from these units at the College- level and works directly with administrators, faculty, and staff in these units in the following areas:

  • Faculty and academic staff personnel actions and budget matters
  • The schedule of classes
  • Space and facilities,
  • Academic program initiatives and reviews
  • Research support
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Tenured member of the UWM College of Letters and Science faculty
  • Member of the Humanities faculty
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with faculty and academic staff personnel actions and budget matters
  • Experience with the schedule of classes
  • Experience with managing space and facilities
  • Experience overseeing academic program initiatives and reviews
  • Experience advancing research support
