Job Summary
The College of Communication and Information at the University of Kentucky seeks applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism and Media. This is a special title series, tenure-eligible, 9-month position reporting directly to the School Director, with appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2023.
Responsibilities and Qualifications: The Assistant Professor's primary focus will be on Sports Journalism and News Writing and Reporting. This position will teach classes in sports journalism (both survey courses and skills classes), news writing, news editing, reporting and advanced reporting, and may teach other areas in the School, including introduction to journalism, history of journalism, and multimedia journalism. This position requires the ability to teach and mentor students at all levels, from first-semester freshmen to graduating seniors. Faculty members in the special title series typically teach three courses each semester and may teach classes that satisfy the Community, Culture and Citizenship in US UK core requirement. The other significant areas of responsibility may be either scholarship related to professional practice or administration in the unit. All tenure-eligible faculty are expected to provide service to the School, College, University, and/or profession.
Required qualifications are Ph.D. in communication or a related field or a master's degree in communication or a related field with significant professional journalism experience (10+ years) with increasing levels of responsibility. Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to earn tenure at the University through their teaching and scholarship/administration. Previous university teaching experience is required. Preferred qualifications are significant university teaching experience, teaching sports journalism courses, demonstrated expertise in teaching large introductory journalism classes, a record of innovative curriculum development to meet changing industry needs, and regional and national recognition for professional accomplishments. About the School: The School of Journalism and Media is recognized for its accomplishments in academic scholarship and professional areas. The School offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in two areas of study: journalism (print/multimedia, broadcast/multimedia) and media arts and studies. The Journalism program is ACEJMC accredited while the Media Arts and Studies program is currently seeking accreditation. The School also participates in the graduate program of the college that includes the M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication.
Students learn first-hand working at the award-winning Kentucky Kernel newspaper, KRNL Lifestyle and Fashion magazine and the Kentucky Kernel Year in Photos. Also, there are great opportunities at WRFL, WUKY, and the Student News Network, our award-winning student newscast. School alumni include Pulitzer, Emmy, Murrow, and Oscar winners and current media makers with ESPN, CBS, NBC, NPR, CNN, EA, and The Washington Post.
The School also promotes the free flow of information through its Scripps Howard First Amendment Center. Since 1981, the School has been the home of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame. The Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues also operates within the School.
About the College: The College of Communication and Information is composed of two schools (School of Information Science and School of Journalism and Media), two departments (Department of Communication and Department of Integrated Strategic Communication), and interdisciplinary master's and PhD programs.
